एक file असल में एक collection होता है data का जिन्हें की एक unit में store किया गया होता है, वहीँ इसे identify किया जाता है एक filename के द्वारा।
ये एक document, picture, audio या video stream, data library, application, या दुसरे collection of data भी हो सकता है।
यहाँ निचे में हमने कुछ brief description प्रदान किया हुआ है प्रत्येक file type की।
Documents के अंतर्गत आता है text files, जैसे की एक Word documents, RTF (Rich Text Format) documents, PDFs, Web pages, इत्यादि।
Pictures के अंतर्गत आते हैं JPEGs, GIFs, BMPs, और layered image files, जैसे की Photoshop documents (PSDs)।
Audio files के अंतर्गत आते हैं MP3s, AACs, WAVs, AIFs, आयर दुसरे files।
वहीँ Video files को encode किया जा सकता है MPEG, MOV, WMV, और DV formats में, वहीँ दुसरे के कई formats मेह्जुद हैं. एक library file unit of data होता है जिसे की reference किया जाता है एक specific program या operating system के द्वारा. वहीँ इसके अंतर्गत आता है plug-ins, components, scripts इत्यादि।
एक application एक प्रकार का program या फिर executable file होता है। Programs जैसे की Microsoft Internet Explorer और Apple iTunes ये दोनों ही applications हैं, लेकिन साथ में ये files भी हैं।
Files को open, save, delete, और move किया जा सकता है अलग अलग folders में. वहीँ उन्हें network connections के across transfer भी किया जा सकता है या Internet से डाउनलोड भी किया जा सकता है।
एक file type को पहचानने के लिए उस file के icon को देखकर पहचाना जा सकता है या उसकी file extension को पढ़कर जाना जा सकता है. अगर कोई file type सम्बंधित हो एक specific application के साथ, तब उस file को double-click करने से उस file को program के भीतर ही open किया जा सकता है।
