OLAP का Full-Form होता है “Online Analytical Processing.” OLAP allow करता है users को analyze करने के लिए database information को वो भी multiple database systems से एक ही समय में. वहीँ जहाँ relational databases को two-dimensional समझा जाता है, OLAP data असल में multidimensional होता है, मतलब की information को compare किया जा सके अलग अलग तरीकों से.
उदहारण के लिए, एक company उनके June की computer sales को compare कर सकती है July के साथ, वहीँ इन results को compare कर सकती है दुसरे another location से, जिन्हें की stored किया जाता है एक अलग की database में.
OLAP का इस्तमाल कर database information को process करने के लिए, एक OLAP server को जरुरत है की वो information को organize और compare करें. Clients analyze कर सकते हैं अलग अलग sets के data वो भी functions का इस्तमाल कर जिन्हें की built किया जाता है OLAP server में ही.
कुछ popular OLAP server software programs में शामिल होते हैं Oracle Express Server और Hyperion Solutions Essbase. OLAP की powerful data analysis capabilities होने के कारण ही, OLAP processing का इस्तमाल ज्यादातर data mining में किया जाता है, जिसका मकसद है discover करना नए relationships वो भी अलग अलग sets of data के बीच में.
