SCSI एक computer interface होता है जिसे की primarily इस्तमाल किया जाता है high-speed hard drives के लिए. ऐसा इसलिए क्यूंकि SCSI support करता है faster data transfer rates वो भी commonly इस्तमाल किये जाने वाले IDE storage interface की तुलना में. SCSI का Full Form होता है “Small Computer System Interface,” और इसे pronounce किया जाता है “scuzzy.”
SCSI daisy-chaining devices को भी support करती हैं, जिसका मतलब की बहुत सारे SCSI hard drives को एक single SCSI interface के साथ भी connect किया जा सकता है, वहीँ इससे performance में कोई भी गिरावट देखने को नहीं मिलेगी.
यहाँ नीचे में अलग अलग प्रकार की SCSI interfaces list की गयी है :
1. SCSI-1: जो की इस्तमाल करता है एक 8-bit bus, वहीँ ये support करता है data transfer speeds करीब 4 MBps की.
2. SCSI-2: इसमें एक 50-pin connector का इस्तमाल होता है वो भी एक 25-pin connector के बदले में, और ये support करता है multiple devices को. ये एक बहुत ही commonly इस्तमाल किया जाने वाला SCSI standards होता है. इसमें Data transfer speeds typically 5 MBps के करीब होती है.
3. Wide SCSI: इसमें एक wider cable (168 cable lines से लेकर 68 pins) जो की support करती है 16-bit data transfers.
4. Fast SCSI: इसमें एक 8-bit bus का उपयोग होता है, लेकिन ये double कर देता है clock rate को जिससे की ये support कर सके data transfer speeds वो भी 10 MBps तक की.
5. Fast Wide SCSI: इसमें एक 16-bit bus का उपयोग होता है और ये support करता है data transfer speeds करीब 20 MBps तक की.
6. Ultra SCSI: इसमें एक 8-bit bus का उपयोग होता है, जो की support करता है data rates करीब 20 MBps की.
7. SCSI-3: ये इस्तमाल करता है एक 16-bit bus की, ये support करता है data rates करीब 40 MBps की. वहीँ इसे Ultra Wide SCSI भी कहा जाता है.
8. Ultra2 SCSI: इसमें एक 8-bit bus का इस्तमाल होता है, जो की support करता है data transfer speeds करीब 40 MBps की.
9. Wide Ultra2 SCSI: इसमें एक 16-bit bus का उपयोग होता है, वहीँ ये support करता है data transfer speeds करीब 80 MBps की.
10. Ultra3 SCSI: इसमें एक 16-bit bus का उपयोग होता है, जो की support करता है data transfer rates करीब 160 MBps की. वहीँ इसे Ultra-160 भी कहा जाता है.
11. Ultra-320 SCSI: इसमें एक 16-bit bus का इस्तमाल होता है, जो की support करता है data transfer speeds करीब 320 MBps की.
12. Ultra-640 SCSI: इसमें एक 16-bit bus का इस्तमाल होता है, जो की support करता है data transfer speeds करीब 640 MBps की.
वैसे तो SCSI का इस्तमाल अब भी कुछ high-performance equipment में होते हैं, लेकिन नयी interfaces में SCSI को replace कर दिया गया है कुछ applications में. उदाहरण के लिए, Firewire और USB 2.0 को ज्यादातर इस्तमाल किया जाता है external hard drives को connect करने के लिए. Serial ATA, या SATA, को आजकल एक fast interface के तोर पर इस्तमाल किया जाता है internal hard drives में.
