एक Active Cell का मतलब होता है उस समय चुने हुए cell वो भी एक spreadsheet पर. इसे identify किया जा सकता है एक bold (जो की typically blue होता है) outline और ये उस cell के चारों तरफ फैला हुआ होता है.
एक Active Cell का current location यदि जानना है तब सबसे standard तरीका है की आप उस cell की column/row combination को देख लो, जैसे की A2 (first column, second row) या B5 (second column, fifth row).
जब भी आप एक Spreadsheet के किसी specific cell पर click करते हैं तब वो एक active cell बन जाता है. वहीँ एक बार आप एक cell को select करते हैं, तब आप चाहें तो उस cell पर values या एक function add कर सकते हैं.
ज्यादातर spreadsheet programs active cell की value display करते हैं उसी cell के भीतर ही एक long text field के अंतर्गत spreadsheet toolbar में. वहीँ text field काफी मददगार होती है function को देखने और modify करने के लिए और वहीँ long text strings को edit करने के लिए जो की सही तरीके से fit नहीं हुए active cell पर.
ज्यादातर spreadsheet applications आपको allow करते हैं एक specific प्रकार के data को define करने के लिए वो भी individual cells में. इसलिए ऐसे में आप toolbar में स्तिथ cell formatting option का इस्तमाल कर सकते हैं या select करें Format → Cells… menu bar से, वहीँ फिर चुने data type वो भी active cell से.
उदाहरण के लिए, अगर active cell पर item की price हो और वहीँ आप चाहते हैं select करना “Currency” data type के तोर पर. यहाँ पर आप चाहें तो एक active cell की appearance को format कर सकते हैं जिसके लिए आपको select करना होगा font, text color, background color, और text styles.
ज्यादातर cases में, एक spreadsheet में केवल एक ही active cell होता है एक समय में. वहीँ लेकिन आप चाहें तो multiple cells भी select कर सकते हैं जिसके लिए आपको cursor को drag करना होगा उस group of cells के ऊपर.
ऐसे case में, सभी selected cells को active cells माना जाता है. वहीं यदि आप ऐसे समय पर cell formatting options को बदल दें जब multiple cells को चुना गया होता है तब ये बदलाव सभी active cells पर प्रदर्शित होते हैं.
NOTE जब आप एक function लिख रहे होते हैं Microsoft Excel में, तब ये ActiveCell property को एक reference के तोर पर इस्तमाल किया जा सकता है active cell के लिए. वहीँ active cell की value को access किया जा सकता है ActiveCell.Value के इस्तमाल से.
