Telecommunications, या telecom, एक ऐसी प्रक्रिया होती है जिसमें की signals की transmission की जाती है वो भी long distances में. इसकी शुरुवात तब हुई जब telegraph का invention हुआ सन 1837 में, वहीँ इसके बाद telephone का भी invention हुआ सन 1876 में. Radio broadcasts की शुरुवात हुई late 1800s में और first television broadcast की गयी early 1900s में. आज के समय की popular forms की telecommunications में शामिल हैं Internet और cellular phone networks.
पहले की telecommunications transmissions इस्तमाल करती हैं analog signals, जिन्हें की transfer किया जाता है copper wires के माध्यम से. आज के समय में, telephone और cable companies अब भी इस्तमाल करती है इन same lines की, वहीँ आज के समय में ज्यादातर transmissions अब digital बन चुके हैं. यही कारन है की, ज्यादातर नयी telecommunications wiring को किया जाता है cables के जरिये जिन्हें की optimized किया जाता है digital communication के लिए, जैसे की fiber optic cables और digital phone lines.
चूँकि दोनों analog और digital communications आधारित हैं electrical signals के ऊपर, ऐसे में transmitted data को receive किया जाता है instantaneously, फिर चाहे उनकी distance कितनी भी क्यूँ न हो. ये allow करती है लोगों को quickly communicate करने के लिए एक दुसरे के साथ जो की रह रहे हों आपके घर के पास या दुनिया के किसी दुसरे जगह में. इसलिए चाहें आप TV देख रहे हों, या email भेज रहे हों या अपने किसी दोस्त से बात कर रहे हों, इन सभी के लिए आपको telecommunications का धन्यवाद् करना चाहिए क्यूंकि इसके कारण ही ये मुमकिन हो पाया है.
