ICANN एक non-profit corporation है जो की responsible है IP addresses की allocation के लिए और साथ में ये manage भी करता है domain name system को.
ICANN का Full Form होता है “Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers.”
सभी computer जो की connected होते हैं Internet के साथ, फिर चाहे तो servers हो या फिर home PCs, सभी के पास एक IP address होता है. वहीँ ये थोडा unrealistic हो जायेगा ICANN के लिए भी अगर वो प्रत्येक computer को assign करे एक individual IP address.
वहीँ बल्कि ICANN allocate करता है blocks of IP addresses companies, educational institutions, और Internet service providers को. फिर ये organizations computers को IP addresses allocate करते हैं जिससे की वो Internet connections का इस्तमाल कर सकें.
वैसे तो ICANN एक US-based organization है, लेकिन इसकी एक global Internet community भी है. वहीँ ICANN के website के अनुसार, ये एक ऐसा organization है “जो की पूरी तरह से dedicated है Internet की operational stability को preserve करने में; वहीँ competition को promote करने में; इसके साथ broad representation of global Internet communities को achieve करने में; और साथ में ऐसी policy बनाने में जो की appropriate हो इसके mission के लिए वहीँ ये सही हो bottom-up, consensus-based processes के लिए” (icann.org).
