Favicon एक small icon होता है जो की एक website को identify करता है एक web browser में.
ज्यादातर browsers display करते हैं एक website के favicon को address bar के left side में, जो की URL के बगल में होता है. कुछ browsers में आपको ये favicon, browser tab में भी डिस्प्ले होता हुआ दिखाई पड़ सकता है, जो की page title के next में मेह्जुद होता है.
Favicons भी automatically ही save हो जाता है bookmarks या “favorites” के जैसे ही.
Favicons काफी समय से मेह्जुद हैं लगभग सन 2000 से, वहीँ इन्हें सभी major web browsers के द्वारा support किया जाता है. लेकिन अलग अलग browsers में आपको favicon के अलग अलग implementations देखने को मिल जायेंगे.
उदाहरण के लिए, Firefox, Internet Explorer, और Safari में favicons को display किया जाता है address bar में, लेकिन Google Chrome में ही केवल आपको ये display होता है page tabs में.
ज्यादातर browsers support करते हैं favicons को जिन्हें की save किया जाता है GIF, PNG, और JPG files के रूप में. लेकिन Internet Explorer में favicons को display किया जाता है जिन्हें की save किया गया होता है .ICO format में.
एक Favicon को website में implement करने का सबसे standard तरीका है की आप एक छोटी 16×16 pixel image (जिसका नाम है favicon.ico) को upload करें website के root directory में.
जब एक user load करता है एक page को एक website से अपने किसी एक web browser में, तब browser उसमें favicon.ico file को ढूंडता है, और वहीँ ये अगर उसे वो मिल जाता है save हुआ एक supported format में, तब ये automatically ही display करता है उस icon को URL के बगल में या page title पर.
इस favicon को specify किया जाता है HTML में एक webpage के, कुछ इस प्रकार से :

इसमें HTML method typically override करता है favicon को जो की save हुआ होता है root directory में, वहीँ ये काफी useful होता है अगर आप चाहते हैं की उसे display करना एक custom favicon में कुछ certain pages के लिए एक website के अंतर्गत.
NOTE: Favicon का standard size होता है 16×16 pixels. वहीँ ज्यादातर browsers कुछ दुसरे sizes को भी recognize कर लेते हैं जो की saved होते हैं 32×32, 48×48, और 64×64 pixel images साइज़ में.
Favicons जो की बड़े होते हैं 16×16 pixels से उन्हें typically scaled down किया जाता है 16×16 में जिससे की उन्हें सही तरीके से display किया जा सके browser में. लेकिन browsers जो की support करते हैं retina displays वो इसे display करते हैं 32×32 pixel icons उनके native resolution में.
