CAD एक ऐसा software होता है जिसका इस्तमाल होता है computer में 2D और 3D designs create करने के लिए. CAD का Full Form है “Computer-Aided Design“.

2D CAD
2D CAD के बहुत सारे applications होते हैं, लेकिन इसे सबसे ज्यादा इस्तमाल किया जाता है vector-based layouts design करने के लिए.
उदाहरण के लिए, architects इस्तमाल करते हैं CAD software को Building Floor Plans और Outdoor Landscapes के overhead views को create करने के लिए. इनके layouts, जिसमें की होते हैं vector graphics, उन्हें scale किया जा सकता है अलग अलग sizes में, जिन्हें की इस्तमाल किया जाता है proposals और blueprints में.
2D CAD के अंतर्गत आते हैं drawings, जैसे की sketches और mockups, जो की बहुत ही common होते हैं किसी एक design process के शुरुवाती दौर में.
3D CAD
3D CAD का सबसे ज्यादा इस्तमाल video games और animated films को develop करने के लिए होता है. वहीँ इसके बहुत से real-world applications भी हैं, जैसे की product design, civil engineering, और simulation modelling.
3D CAD के अंतर्गत आते हैं computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), जिसमें की three-dimensional objects की actual manufacturing होती है.
2D CAD drawings के तरह ही, 3D models भी typically vector-based होते हैं, लेकिन vectors के अंतर्गत आते है three dimensions, न की two dimensions. ये allow करता है designers को create करने के लिए complex 3D shapes जिसे की move, rotate, enlarge, और modify किया जा सकता है.
कुछ 3D models को create किया जाता है केवल polygons से ही, वहीँ दूसरों के अंतर्गत में आते हैं Bézier curves और rounded surfaces.
जब एक 3D model create किया जाता है, तब एक CAD designer को सबसे पहले construct करना पड़ता है उस object की basic shape, या “wireframe.”
एक बार shape पूर्ण हो जाये, तब फिर surfaces को उसमें add किया जाता है जिसमें आते हैं colors, gradients, या designs जिन्हें की apply किया जाता है एक process के द्वारा जिसे की texture mapping कहा जाता है.
ज्यादातर CAD programs में ये ability होती है जिससे की lighting को adjust किया जा सके, जो की affect करती हैं Objects की shadows और reflections पर. कुछ programs के अंतर्गत एक timeline भी होता है जिसका इस्तमाल होता है 3D animations create करने के लिए.
